Ok! This has been a point of contention for some time. What can an agent charge you for their services. I will list the fees an agent can add and those they should not add to their talent.
1. Sign up fee: Never
2. Registration Fee: Maybe! If they charge a fee to file you in their system, it should be minimal and taken out of payment from a job/s they have found you.
3. Photography: Never! If you cannot rely on finding, using and paying for your own photographer, you are with the wrong agent.
4. Comp Cards: See #3. Also...Talent Agents demand that YOU place THEIR logo on YOUR pictures. If you plan to do so, have your photo lab place the logo on 1/2 of your order and keep the other pictures logo free.
5. Web site Fee: Some agents charge in essence of $75-$300 a year to be listed on their web site.
6. Talent Book: Some agents charge in essence of $100 -$500 a year to be listed in their talent book.
(Note on #5 and #6: If you do not make 5x-10x the amount of money back through work from your agent these costs are a waste of money!
7. Classes: If you HAVE to take THEIR classes to join their agency, you should not join. Taking classes are important!!!!
But you should be in charge of who will be teaching you and for how much you are willing to pay!
8. Visa/Mastercard: If your agent takes Visa/Mastercard...they may not be in the business to market your talent. (What are they selling???)
9. Pay per Audition: Some online supposed agencies are making talent bid for auditions. These could cost around $5-10 an audition notice. It is a scam!!!
10. What is an agent's fee rate? Union: 10% Non-union 20-25%
Now you know!
